As climate change and global warming make more of a dent in our conciousness and public awareness worldwide, not to mention on our fragile atmosphere on this Third Rock from the Sun -- our home planet Earth -- various adaptation strategies are being proposed for the future survival of the human species. Among them are:
1. Polar cities, also called sustainable polar retreats (SPR), to house survivors of global warming's catastrophic events in the year 2500 or so:

2. Floating cities, proposed by some Dutch thinkers in Holland, that are basically houseboats that can rise and fall with the tides while moored to land-based piers and docks

3. Solar cities: towns, villages and cities in temperate zones of the Earth that are powered completely by solar power grids for use in the event that fossil fuels can no longer be burned and thrust into the atmosphere, either due to political and government fiats or the depletion of such fossil fuels.

4. The Doomsday Vault, a mountainside vault in Svalbard, Norway that houses a variety of seeds. [The final design for a "doomsday" vault that will house seeds from all known varieties of food crops has been unveiled by the Norwegian government. The Svalbard International Seed Vault will be built into a mountainside on a remote island near the North Pole. The vault aims to safeguard the world's agriculture from future catastrophes, such as nuclear war, asteroid strikes and climate change. The seed bank is to open in 2008.]

5. Modern-day Noah's Ark to house ''breeding pairs of human beings'' in the event of catastrophic climate change events that destroy civilization as we know it around year 2499.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/23/opinion/23friedman.html?ref=opinion
["It struck me as I read that story that our generation has entered a phase that no previous generation has ever experienced: the Noah phase. With more and more species threatened with extinction by The Flood that is today's global economic juggernaut, we may be the first generation in human history that literally has to act like Noah — to save the last pairs of a wide range of species. " -- Thomas Friedman, New York Times columnist, Dec. 22, 2007]
6. Arktopia, "ark cities" located in various locations around the world, built into mountainsides where cavernous rooms and housing facilities will allow humans to survive terrible climate change events that destroy civilization as we know it around year 2498. [Excerpt: "I know the chances of the Arktopia thing working out are slim, but I just gotta say - with every day that passes I wonder more and more if you'll ever make an appearance, after all. I mean, I've been building this ark for what, fifty years now?"]

6.5 Fall-out shelters to house survivors of global warming, year circa 2400 ?

[''In an age of the threat of global warming and climate change, Huntsville is dusting off its Cold War manual to create the nation's most ambitious fallout-shelter plan, featuring an abandoned mine big enough for 20,000 people to take cover underground.'' - edited]
7. Another idea that has been floated is the idea of Floating Cruise Ship Cities: in the event of catastrophic climate change events in far distant future times, large and small cruise ships could be used to house survivors of humankind, where breeding pairs of human beings could ensure future generations of humans.

["Adaptation to global warming covers attempts to lessen civilization's vulnerabilities to the negative effects of global warming. This is in contrast to the mitigation of global warming, which involves actions meant to reduce the negative effects of global warming. However, it is very likely that adaptation to global warming is inevitable as "it is unlikely that levels of greenhouse gases can be kept low enough to avoid a projected temperature rise of 2C."]
2. A Stern warning on global warming: "Britain’s landmark review of the economics of climate change is clear: act now or pay a far higher price later. Let us highlight Nicholas Stern’s findings.
http://www.chinadialogue.net/article/show/single/en/528-A-Stern-warning-on-global-warming
"The pro-growth strategy for the longer term, Stern adds, is tackling climate change – which can be done in a way that does not cap any countries’ aspirations for growth."
“The scientific evidence is now overwhelming: climate change presents very serious global risks, and it demands an urgent global response.”

One of Germany’s most important papers, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, calls for "a revolution in our way of thinking for people to understand that in the far distant future, humankind might need to house survivors of global warming events in so-called 'polar cities'".
Ed. note: "Well, the paper didn't actualy write that, not yet."
